Understanding cataracts

A foggy window you can clear.

A cataract is a clouding of your eye's natural lens โ€” like looking through a foggy window. The good news: cataract surgery is one of the most successful operations in medicine.

Clear lens โ†’ cloudy over years Age 40 Age 60 Age 75 Proteins clump together over decades

Your lens slowly gets cloudy.

Inside your eye sits a clear lens that focuses light onto the retina. With age, proteins in the lens clump together, scattering light instead of focusing it cleanly. That scattering is what makes vision blurry, dim, or yellowed.

Cataracts develop gradually โ€” most people don't notice for years. They're a natural part of aging, though diabetes, sun exposure, and certain medications speed them up.

Here's the plan โ€”
and why it works.

Early stage

Update your glasses

A new prescription can compensate for early cataracts and buy time before surgery.

Light sensitivity

Anti-glare lenses

Polarized sunglasses and anti-reflective coating reduce halos and glare from oncoming headlights.

When ready

Cataract surgery

Cloudy lens is replaced with a clear artificial one. Quick recovery, excellent results.

Lens options

Choose your vision

Standard, multifocal, or astigmatism-correcting lenses โ€” tailored to how you want to see.

When to act sooner

If cataracts are making driving unsafe, causing falls, or interfering with independence โ€” don't wait. Surgery is straightforward and restores vision quickly.

Common questions

Honest answers to common questions.

Do I need surgery right now?+

Usually no rush. Surgery is recommended when cataracts interfere with daily life โ€” driving at night, reading, recognizing faces. If your vision is still working for you, watchful waiting is fine.

Will surgery hurt?+

No. You'll be awake but very relaxed. Numbing drops make the eye itself feel nothing. The procedure takes about 15 minutes per eye.

What lens should I choose?+

Standard lenses give great distance vision; you'll likely still need reading glasses. Premium lenses (multifocal, extended depth of focus, toric) can reduce dependence on glasses. We'll walk through options based on your lifestyle.

Can cataracts come back?+

The cataract itself can't return, but about 1 in 5 people develop a cloudy film behind the new lens months or years later. A quick painless laser called YAG fixes it in minutes.

Will I still need glasses after?+

Depends on the lens you choose. Standard lenses: usually yes, for reading. Premium lenses: often not, though perfection isn't guaranteed. We'll set realistic expectations together.
