Understanding after your eye injection

A quick procedure. Simple aftercare.

Most patients do well right after an intravitreal injection. Mild irritation for a day is normal. These simple steps reduce the already-low risk of complications.

The medicine is inside your eye โ€” now doing its work.

The medication was injected into the vitreous gel inside your eye through a tiny needle. The entry point is self-sealing and usually invisible within hours.

The medication will diffuse through your eye over the coming weeks, reducing abnormal blood vessels or swelling. Your next injection interval depends on your response โ€” your doctor will set the schedule.

Here's the plan โ€”
and why it works.

Rest of today

Take it easy

Mild irritation, a scratchy feeling, or watery eye is normal for the first 24 hours. Artificial tears help. Avoid rubbing.

Day 1-3

Gentle activities

No swimming or hot tubs. No eye makeup for 24 hours. Most patients return to work the same or next day.

Week 1

Back to normal

All activities cleared. Any redness should be fading. Minor floaters gone.

Ongoing

Monitor at home

Use the Amsler grid we gave you weekly to check central vision. Come in between appointments if anything changes.

Call us immediately if

Severe eye pain (not just irritation), significant decrease in vision, sudden new floaters or flashes, or increasing redness or discharge โ€” especially 1-5 days after the injection. Rare but serious complications (infection, retinal issues) are time-sensitive.

Common questions

Honest answers to common questions.

Will I see something moving in my eye?+

You might see a few floaters or a dark spot for a day or two โ€” this is the medication or a small air bubble. It's expected and fades.

My eye is red where you injected. Is that normal?+

A small red spot (subconjunctival hemorrhage) is common and harmless โ€” it looks like a bruise on the white of the eye. It fades in 1-2 weeks.

Can I rub my eye?+

Don't rub, press, or squeeze the eye for 24 hours. After that, normal activities are fine.

Can I wear contact lenses?+

Skip contacts for 24 hours. Glasses are fine.

Can I swim?+

Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, and natural bodies of water for 3 days to reduce infection risk. Showering is fine.

What signs mean I should call right away?+

Severe pain (not just irritation), significant decrease in vision, new large floaters or flashes, or increasing redness. These could signal rare but serious complications like infection โ€” time matters.

How many injections will I need total?+

Depends on your condition and response. Wet AMD often requires ongoing treatment every 4-12 weeks. Some conditions resolve after several injections. We track your response at each visit.
